Football 101 for Moms

Football 101 for Moms is a fun event for moms to get an inside look how the program is run and how the game is played. The clinic is held August.

Some of the activities;

  * Try on gear the players wear         * Meet Coaches

  * Participate in some drills              * Learn about how coaches address safety

  * Learn basic rules and terminology  * Learn about how to get more invovled

Communication

Communication is very important in ensuring a positive experience for you and your child. We use several methods for communicating what is going on in the program.  They are;

2 Parent Meetings (May and August) At these meetings we will introduce coaches, hand out schedules, go over school policies, communication, expectations and volunteer opportunities. It is imperative that you attend these meetings. So often we hear from parents who are frustrated they did not know something that was discussed at these meetings simply because they did not attend.  If you are not able to attend these meetings due to work schedules and cannot get an adult member of your household to attend, it is your responsibility to communicate that with the Head Football Coach prior to that meeting.

An important document that we will go over at these meetings is the Team Handbook.  You can view this document by clicking on the link on this page marked "Helpful Links."

Band App: The Remind App is a way for coaches to send you updates in a timely manner directly to your mobile device.  You can sign up for that app by contacting a coach or have your child (that is already connected) send you an invite by text.

This website: We will update this site regularly to provide you with important information to enhance your experience.

Social Media: We have a Facebook page titled: Official-Siuslaw Vikings Football. This site will have announcements, game results, practice and workout schedules and photos from games and events.

Flyers and Handouts: On occasion we may send your child home with information.  It is your child's responsibility to ensure that information contained in those handouts get to you.

Should you need to contact about a scheduling issue, injury or other concerns, it is important that you do that immediately.  Parents and players who fail to communicate scheduling issues due to family issues, illness, injury or for other reasons, prior to a practice, mandatory workout or game may face disciplinary action or loss of playing time.  Please read through the Siuslaw High School Athletic Handbook for more information regarding this.

Open Door Policy

Parents are a vital part of our team.  Your positive attitude, team support, and participation is critical to a successful program.  We want you to be involved as much as you would like to be, but it is also critical that you distance yourself in certain ways.  Let the coaches coach and the players play.

Your role as a parent is to support your child and our team.  We also ask that you help with fundraising projects in any way that you can.  We also encourage parents to coach in our youth programs or help in a supportive role in the high school program.  (Statistician, equipment, filming, chain crew, etc.)

First, we want you student-athlete to advocate for themselves.  They need to speak to us first about their concerns.  This is typically the best growing experience a player can have during their career in high school.  It encourages maturity and accountability.  Our staff will be honest and always positive with the player.  We will also develop a plan of action to correct any concerns addressed.

If as a parent, you have a concern or question that needs to be addressed with our coaching staff, we will be happy to arrange a meeting.  In this meeting we require a few conditions.

  1. We will meet at a convenient time for our staff by appointment only.

  2. We will not discuss team strategy or practice.

  3. We will not discuss other players on the team unless it is a safety concern.

  4. Any individuals involved in question will be present at the meeting.

  5. The meeting will have a time limit to be determined.

Expectations

Parent Expectations

We know that you want the very best for your child.  We do too!  We will always try to make decisions based on knowledge that we have acquired and hopefully achieve a balance between what is best for your child and the football program as a whole.

  • Support your child.  They need you to stay positive and give the constant encouragement.  Even though sometimes they may not show it, they listen to you, and you influence them more than anyone else!

  • Help in any way that you can.  There are a ton of jobs that we can use enthusiastic and positive people to help.

  • Support our program by cheering in a positive manner at all times.

  • Understand that when we correct your child it is not personal.  We are correcting the action with the best interest of the player and team in mind.

  • Please respect the choices that our coaches make.  We do our best to create a successful football team.

  • Arrange for timely pickup of your child after games.  We don’t always know exactly when we will be back from a road game but most players will have access to a phone.

  • Criticize coaches privately.  We will be happy to address issues in a timely manner.  Your opinion is valued.  Doing this in front of players or others does nothing to help our program.

Player Expectations

It is the player’s responsibility to conduct themselves in manner that will allow them to be successful.  To fulfill this responsibility, a player must;

  1. Do what is right; follow the team pledge and team mission.

  2. Adhere to all school and team policies.

  3. Accomplish “no talent” issues.  (Be on time, make a great effort, follow directions, communicate, and take care of equipment.)

  4. Have fun, CARE, and do your job.

  5. Be accountable to your teammates.

  6. Be a good teammate.  Care for each other.

Attendance

Hunting, vacations, and other non-school related absences are understandable conflicts with sports but are not considered excused absences.  Your playing time will be negatively affected.  In order for your absence to be excused, you must provide a note for the absence.  Family emergency, illness, or tragedy, are excused and any support you need, will be given.

Doctors and Dentists Appointments:

Please make every effort to have appointments outside of practice time.  We have very few opportunities to practice.  It is vital that you student-athlete makes every practice possible.

Safety

All coaches are certified in HEADS UP FOOTBALL which covers concussion awareness, prevention and protocols as well as heat illness prevention.  Siuslaw Football coaches have also met all OSAA certification requirements. In addition, many of the coaches have spent personal time and money to attend several conferences and clinics to not only better themselves but to help ensure a positive and rewarding experience for your child.

The risk of injury, including concussion, is always a there in any sport. Siuslaw Football takes that risk very seriously.  The Siuslaw High School Athletic Department and OSAA have taken pro-active steps to address those concerns.  All football coaches are trained in HEADS UP FOOTBALL, which includes learning techniques to reduce the risks and help coaches recognize the warning signs of a possible concussion.  The Siuslaw School Disctrict and OSAA have specific protocols to follow should an athlete demonstrate any one of those warning signs. Those warning signs may include;

* Dizziness

* Head Ache

* Difficulty Concentrating

* Confusion

* Nausea

* Vomiting

* Loss of Consciousness

* Sensitivity to Light or Sound

* Blurred Vision

The signs of concussion do not always show up immediately.  The coaching staff are not medical professionals.  If you feel your child is exhibiting any of these signs as the result of a concussion event, seek medical attention and let the coaching staff know.

Other injuries such as sprains and muscle pulls will often require treatment at home.  If your child's coach advises treatment such as an icing regiment outside of school hours, please support that effort at home.  If your child reports to you that he is experiencing joint pain, make sure your child has communicated that to his coach.

Equipment

Siuslaw School District does it's very best with the available resources to supply your child with highest quality equipment possible. We do weekly equipment checks before practice.  It is your child's responsibility to care for the equipment issued to him. If there are fitting issues, equipment damage or any other equipment issues, it is your child's responsibility to communicate those issues to his coach immediately and to make themselves available to rectify the issue before resuming practice or game participation.

Workouts / Nutrition

Workouts and proper nutrition are an important part of competitive athletics.  In-season workouts are required as a member of the Siuslaw High School Football Team.  Workouts scheduled out of season are not required but extremely encouraged. It is import for your child's safety and success to take advantage of those scheduled workouts. To see what workouts are scheduled, check out our calendar page and contact a coach. Remember..."Weightlifting might not be foe everyone but, neither is playing time."

Proper nutrition is important for anyone but especially for youth who are growing rapidly and expending a great deal of energy participating in organized sports.  Below there is a link to helpful nutrition tips for your child.

We need many volunteers to make this program successful.  The following are opportunities to give your valuable time.
